Bhimtal Case Breakthrough: Fugitive Main Accused Mohammad Yunus alias AMDY Behind Bars

Joint Operation by Bhimtal Police, SIT, SOG Yields Success

Nainital, April 30, 2026: In a major crackdown on a high-profile religious conversion case in Nainital district, police have arrested the prime accused Mohammad Yunus alias AMDY. Under the directives of Senior Superintendent of Police Dr. Manjunath TC, a special joint team of Bhimtal Police, SIT, and SOG apprehended the fugitive from the Nainital area. He was produced in court and remanded to 14 days’ judicial custody.

Case Details: Registered Under Sections 3/5 of Uttarakhand Act

Crime No. 017/2026 was registered at Mallital Police Station on April 29 under Sections 3/5 of the Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion Act 2018, and BNS 2020 Sections 115, 319, 69. The complaint alleges the accused hid his identity to contact women, building trust through photography, video shoots, trekking, and music sessions.

Modus Operandi: Rs 17 Lakh Duped, Marriage Lure for Conversion

Since 2020, the accused spent around Rs 17 lakh on the complainant for cameras, lenses, mobiles, etc. He promised marriage while concealing his religious identity, gradually pressuring her for conversion. Similar complaints from other victims escalated the case.

Special Team Formed: Accused Denied High Court Relief

Noticing the sensitivity, SSP Dr. Manjunath TC formed a special team per court orders. The accused sought refuge in the High Court but got no relief. Continuous raids under SP Crime Dr. Jagdish Chandra’s supervision led to the arrest.
