Haldwani, April 22, 2026 (Special Correspondent): In a significant show of solidarity, journalists from Haldwani, led by Shramjivi Patrakar Union Uttarakhand President Shri Sarvendra Bisht and District General Secretary Shri Bhupendra Rawat, met Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nainital Dr. Manjunath TC at his office today. They submitted a memorandum demanding strict action against social media influencers, YouTube channels misusing platforms, and self-proclaimed “journalists” defaming the profession.
Memorandum Targets Kamal Kafaltiya: Calls for Legal Action Over Recent Buddha Park Assault
The memorandum specifically highlighted Kamal Kafaltiya, who masquerades as a journalist while engaging in misconduct. Union leaders informed the SSP that Kafaltiya recently abused a print media journalist at Buddha Park, using offensive language and threats. “Such incidents not only demoralize genuine reporters but also erode public trust in journalism,” said Bisht. The union urged immediate legal proceedings under relevant laws to protect media dignity.
Social Media Influencers Under Fire: Spreading Fake News to Defame Journalists for Personal Gain
Journalists accused influencers and YouTube operators of deliberately tarnishing their reputation through misleading, defamatory, and false content. Aimed at gaining views, likes, and monetization, these posts undermine media credibility and social harmony. The memorandum noted a surge in such activities in Uttarakhand, where sensitive local issues amplify their impact.
Key demands include:
Identification and strict legal action against offending social media accounts and YouTube channels.
Prosecution under IT Act sections (e.g., 66A, 67) and IPC provisions.
Issuance of guidelines to prevent future misuse.
Concrete measures for journalists’ safety, including rapid response mechanisms.
SSP’s Firm Assurance: “No Mercy for Those Damaging Law and Order – IT Act Action Imminent”
SSP Dr. Manjunath TC assured the delegation of swift action. “Journalists’ safety and honor are our top priority. We will not tolerate those tarnishing their dignity or misusing social media for misinformation,” he stated. Promising zero tolerance, he directed cyber cells to probe accounts and individuals, vowing FIRs under IT Act and other laws. “Anyone disrupting Nainital’s law and order will face the full force of justice,” added the SSP.
Broader Context: Rising Threats to Journalists in Uttarakhand Demand Urgent Reforms
This meeting underscores growing concerns over journalist safety in Uttarakhand, with over a dozen assaults reported in recent years amid reporting on roads, governance, and civic issues. The union’s proactive step could set a precedent, prompting calls for statewide helplines and SOPs. As social media proliferates, balancing free speech with accountability remains key.
