Nainital Police Acts on Zero‑Tolerance Policy, Arrests Man in Minor Girl’s Conversion Case

, – In line with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Shri Pushkar Singh Dhami’s “zero tolerance” policy against religious conversions, Nainital police have carried out swift action in a case of harassment, undue pressure for conversion and online blackmail of a minor girl. Acting on the directions of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nainital Dr. Manjunath T.C., the police have arrested one accused from the Lal Kuwan area.

Background of the Case

On 29 April 2026, the minor girl lodged a complaint at the Lal Kuwan Police Station stating that about two months earlier an accused had contacted her on Instagram through a fake ID bearing a girl’s photograph. During the conversation, the accused collected personal details, obtained her mobile number and then intensified contact over the phone. Police say the accused later physically harassed her, pressurised her to change her religion and threatened to create an obscene video using artificial‑intelligence (AI) technology and circulate it on social media if she resisted. At the time of the incident, the girl was a minor.

Police Action and FIR Details

As soon as the complaint came to light, SSP Nainital Dr. Manjunath T.C. took immediate cognisance of the matter and directed local officers to register an FIR without delay and ensure the swift arrest of the accused. In compliance, the Lal Kuwan Police Station registered an FIR under Section Mu0as0 69/26, Sections 78/79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 7/8 of the POCSO Act. During investigation, on the basis of evidence, Sections 3(1)/5(1) of the Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Act‑2022 were also added to the charge‑sheet.

Under the supervision of Superintendent of Police Haldwani Shri Manoj Katyal, Kshetragati Adhikari Lal Kuwan/Haldwani Shri Amit Saini, and In‑charge Inspector Lal Kuwan Shri Brijmohan Singh Rana, a police team was formed to search for the suspect. Using surveillance and other technical means, the accused was traced and apprehended from the Lal Kuwan area on 1 May 2026 and produced before the Hon’ble Court.
