Max Hospital Vaishali Successfully Treats Two Haldwani Patients with Complex Gastrointestinal Cancers

Advanced surgical techniques and multidisciplinary treatment help patients with bile duct and rectal cancers recover successfully
Haldwani, October 22, 2026: Doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali, have successfully treated two patients from Haldwani suffering from complex gastrointestinal (GI) cancers involving the bile duct and rectum. The medical team, led by Dr. Vivek Mangla, Vice Chairman and Head of GI and HPB Surgery and Surgical Oncology, employed advanced surgical techniques, a combination of treatment modalities and comprehensive post-operative care to manage the two complex cases.
In the first case, 60-year-old Hansi Dangi of Haldwani was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma, a type of bile duct cancer affecting the middle portion of the common bile duct (CBD). She was admitted to the hospital with severe obstructive jaundice, significantly elevated bilirubin levels and a history of fever lasting nearly a month.
Before proceeding with definitive surgery, doctors focused on stabilising her condition. A procedure was performed to relieve the obstruction in the bile duct and improve bile flow, helping reduce jaundice and prepare her for surgery. Once her condition stabilised, the surgical team removed the affected portion of the bile duct along with the surrounding lymph nodes. The remaining bile duct was then connected to the small intestine to restore the normal flow of bile into the digestive system.
The patient recovered well after surgery without any major complications. She resumed a normal diet and was discharged on the seventh day after surgery in a stable condition.
The second case involved 61-year-old Man Singh, also from Haldwani, who was diagnosed with locally advanced cancer of the middle portion of the rectum. His treatment began with long-course chemoradiotherapy, followed by four cycles of FOLFOX chemotherapy, which resulted in a partial response to treatment.
The doctors subsequently performed a laparoscopic radical low anterior resection, a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove the affected portion of the rectum along with the surrounding lymph nodes. The patient recovered satisfactorily and was discharged in a stable condition on the fifth day after surgery. He also received three additional cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy following the operation.
Dr. Vivek Mangla, Vice Chairman and Head of GI and HPB Surgery and Surgical Oncology at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali, said, “The treatment of complex gastrointestinal cancers often requires a carefully planned, multidisciplinary approach, particularly when patients present with serious complications. In bile duct cancer, relieving the obstruction and stabilising the patient before surgery are crucial. Rectal cancer, on the other hand, may require a combination of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery and appropriate post-operative rehabilitation. Our focus is on tailoring treatment to each patient’s condition and ensuring the timely identification and management of potential complications.”
To make specialised medical consultations more accessible to patients, Dr. Mangla also conducts regular outpatient department (OPD) consultations at Sai Hospital in Haldwani on the fourth Thursday of every month, from 12 noon to 2 pm. The initiative enables patients from Haldwani and nearby areas to seek specialist advice closer to home.
Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali, provides multidisciplinary care for complex gastrointestinal and hepatopancreatobiliary (GI and HPB) conditions, including cancers of the liver, pancreas, bile duct, stomach, colon and rectum. The hospital focuses on evidence-based treatment, advanced surgical care and coordinated management throughout different stages of cancer treatment.
