Nainital Erupts: Protest Over Yoga Trainer Jyoti Mer Murder, SSP Gherao on Second Day of Dharna
Nainital | Anger is mounting in the district over the murder of yoga trainer Jyoti Mer. Even after 18 days, police have failed to arrest the culprits, prompting citizens to intensify their agitation. On the second consecutive day, a dharna continued at Buddha Park under the leadership of Fauji Bhuvan Pandey and the Pahadi Army.
Protesters raised slogans against the district administration, demanding the immediate dismissal of SSP Nainital and accusing the police of shielding criminals. Families of the victim and activists alleged that instead of supporting justice seekers, police have been behaving with them like criminals.
A major flashpoint of anger was the alleged police misbehavior with Pahadi Army president Harish Rawat, where his collar was reportedly grabbed during the stir. Expressing outrage, Rawat questioned:
“Why was an order given to lathi-charge peaceful protesters? Why are we being treated like criminals while the real culprits roam free? This agitation will continue until arrests are made. If nothing happens within 2 days, we will launch a mass jail-bharo movement.”
Social activists including Deepa Pandey, Prema Mer, and Kavita Jeena voiced concern over deteriorating law and order, saying women and children no longer feel safe. They alleged that criminals are being protected and police have failed miserably.
Meanwhile, SP (City) Prakash Chandra assured the protesters that the culprits would be arrested within two days. However, agitators warned that if the promise is not fulfilled, the protest will escalate further.
A large number of people and organizations, including former soldiers, social leaders, and local representatives, joined the dharna and strongly criticized the police administration for its inaction.
All eyes are now on the next 48 hours to see whether the police deliver justice or face intensifying public agitation.
