Golden Jubilee of Uttarakhand Open University Begins,

Pavneet Singh bindra

Haldwani, — On the occasion of completing 20 years since its establishment, Uttarakhand Open University inaugurated a three-day celebration titled “20 Years of Golden Success: Three-Day Festival on Freedom and Progress”, scheduled from August 13 to 15. The first session on the opening day was presided over by the University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Naveen Chandra Lohani.

In his welcome address, Prof. Girija Pandey said that the formation of the Research Directorate aimed to meet the aspirations of the state and the nation, and to explore new knowledge.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Jamal Siddiqui, Librarian of Chaudhary Charan Singh University, stressed the importance of correctly identifying the research problem, pointing out that research cannot rely solely on Google searches, as the information there is not always accurate, and books remain more reliable sources. He also demonstrated how researchers could access the e-library of Chaudhary Charan Singh University.

Chief Guest Prof. Diwan Singh Rawat, Vice-Chancellor of Kumaun University, emphasised that familiarity with one’s roots is essential for meaningful research. Citing Chanakya, he noted that for a nation to develop, six elements are vital: strong leadership, skilled diplomacy, a robust army, a strong economy, proper education, and a solid infrastructure — all of which India possesses.

In his presidential address, Prof. Naveen Chandra Lohani said that for acquiring new knowledge, a researcher must be like an “empty vessel,” always ready to learn new things. Research should be objective and impartial, based on one’s own experiences and discoveries, rather than mere copy-paste material. A good researcher must also be a good listener, even to opposing viewpoints, as they help improve one’s work in the future.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Manmohan Joshi.

In the second session, researchers of the University presented their research papers. Subject experts Prof. Rajesh Joshi (former Editor, BBC Radio Hindi) and Dr. Chandra Singh Negi (M.B. P.G. College, Zoology Department) were present. Prof. Girija Pandey delivered the vote of thanks.

The event was attended by Registrar Dr. Khemraj Bhatt, Controller of Examinations Dr. Somesh Kumar, Finance Controller S.P. Singh, Directors of various faculties, academic and non-academic staff, and research scholars.
