Complex Brain Tumor Surgery Successfully Conducted at Dr. Sushila Tiwari Goverment Hospital,
Haldwani, September 6. A remarkable achievement was recorded at Dr. Sushila Tiwari Government Hospital, Haldwani, where renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Abhishek Raj successfully performed a highly complex brain tumor surgery, bringing relief and joy to the patient and her family.
The patient, 34-year-old Kiran Devi, a resident of Jawahar Nagar, Pantnagar, had been suffering from severe headaches, swelling in the left eye, and persistent tearing for the past two years. Upon detailed examination, she was diagnosed with sphenoid wing meningioma, a type of slow-growing brain tumor. Acting upon this, Dr. Abhishek Raj recommended immediate surgical intervention.
According to Dr. Raj, sphenoid wing meningioma originates from the wing of the sphenoid bone at the base of the skull and can compress surrounding critical structures such as the optic nerve, cavernous sinus, and internal carotid artery. This often leads to symptoms like headaches, vision impairment, or double vision.
The tumor, approximately 7 cm in size, was successfully removed in a surgery that lasted nearly 10 hours, performed with the help of an advanced neuro-microscope. The patient’s condition has improved significantly, and she is likely to be discharged soon.
Highlighting the financial aspect, Dr. Raj pointed out that such surgeries usually cost around 4–5 lakh rupees in private hospitals. However, at Dr. Sushila Tiwari Hospital, it was carried out completely free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.
The operation was supported by the dedicated efforts of Prof. Dr. A.K. Sinha, Head of the Anesthesia Department, along with the nursing staff.
Congratulating Dr. Raj and his team, Acting Principal Dr. Pankaj Singh said that this achievement is a matter of pride for the hospital. He further emphasized that under the Ayushman scheme, patients admitted with valid cards are provided free treatment, medication, and surgeries — significantly benefiting the underprivileged sections of society.
